Perth
We all arrived in sunny (but a little cold we're so spoilt now!!) Perth city on Friday and under instruction from Gemma and Kingsley we headed towards Ocean Beach Hostel in Cottesloe on the outskirts of the city. This gem of a hostel was very impressive right on the beach with lovely ensuite rooms and actual windows (none in Singapore hostel!) I was mortified about asking guy over the phone if the rooms had air-con (pure habit!) when we got there. Very nippy weather! After a little nap - and giving the impression we'd just travelled directly from Ireland - we headed to the local pub and immersed ourselves in the aussie culture by ordering midi's of Tooheys New beer and practising our australian (e.g. "aaaah yeaaaa", "streuth ya flamin gallath", etc..) - not condescending to everyone around us I'm sure!! At this point we had received text from Una saying she was on her way to Dublin airport and our excitement built as we knew/thought we'd see her soon - sunday morning to be exact.
The next day we headed further out to Freemantle (Freo to the locals) and did boring sensible things like buy our australian sims, yha discount cards and enquire about car rental for the next week. We ended the day there by eating and drinking in Little Creatures - gorgeous restaurant on the esplanade. We were really interested to find out actually that an Irish guy called C.Y O'Connor had a statue in the town and was revered for his engineering skills by making Freemantle into a functioning port (woo hoo!!) but was seemingly cursed by some locals for using sacred grounds (boo hiss!). We now knew/thought Una wouldn't be joining us until lunch-time Sunday as she had only made it as far as London!!! Good old reliable Aer Lingus!!
Sunday was spent on the beach (see photo's), then we sampled the fish n' chips and headed to Ocean Beach Hotel around 5ish thinking we were "early" for the sunday session - people come from all around for this. Unfortunately we weren't aware closing is 10pm on a Sunday!! Luckily we found out this in advance and trips were made to nearest offie. Later back in the hostel with our take-away we met some irish lads, local lads and a tasmanian devil!!! Funnily enough Una upon her arrival at reception heard us before she saw us. And four becomes five for the rest of our aussie adventure!! Una herself will make her debut on tanga tanga to fill you in on our trip into south-western oz in our camper vans/hiaces ....
