Friday night and what else would 7 twenty-somethings do in Sydney? Head to a Fun Fair of course! Lorna and myself joined the Athlonians Brid, Helen, Cathy, Jim and Afric and Offaly man Mike for a night of upside down rides, candy floss and classic fair ground music. One short water taxi across the Harbour and we arrived at the land of the Big Wheel. It was only when we were in the Park and had bought our (excellent value) all rides inclusive $20 tickets that I realised Mike and I were the only Non-Athlonians there and seriously out numbered! Ah well, if you can't beat them, join them. There are so many of them in Sydney I hardly believe there are any left in Athlone...
Naturally we headed straight to the only pub in Lunar Park to enjoy our complimentary free hard liquor drink (that's exactly what the man who sold me my ticket said to me - hard liqour - I think he was judging me too, as if to take advantage of the free drink was wrong! He also tried to impress on me the fact that I could use the voucher for a non-alcoholic beverage if I so wished - yeah right - are you mad?) While supping our complimentary hard liqour, we discussed tactis about which rides to embark on first. Decisions decisions. In the end we agreed that the best approach was to try everything once and see how our stomachs handled it.
It was all going so well until we took a break for some Nachos, Candy Floss, Pop corn and Beer - you know, your 4 main food groups - and then went on the Upside-Down-Pirate-Ship ride. This ride was at the back of the park and had been discovered by Lorna who insisted we try it and enforced this rule just after we had eaten while she and Cathy watched from the ground...hmm... suspiscious....? Brid Helen and myself half screamed half laughed our way through the ride, Mike gripped onto the bars and looked like he was going to cry, Afric couldnt stop laughing while Jim sat there, casual as anything acting like he was sitting in a car driving along the N7 and not hanging upside down over concrete with his life flashing before his eyes - I don't know how he did it. We shakily disembarked, a little queasy and a chamring shade of green but it was definitely worth it.
After a spin on the Bumper cars where you were only allowed drive anti-clockwise (!?) we called it a night and headed home, exhausted after a night of pure innocent childish fun.
