Hi All,

We have arrived at the last story  of our trip. From the lovely island of Hvar we took the ferry to a rented car on the mainland and from there we headed to the northern part of Croatia. Our first stop were the Plitvice Lakes that form the centre of the Plitvice National Park. A Unesco site, this area looks slightly unreal and walking around there makes you think you are in a Lord of the Rings film (again). Imagine six or no - about 10 little lakes, all cristal clear with view to the bottom, with a strong turquoise colour, connected by a set of waterfalls of all shapes and sizes. Almost too perfect to be natural. But then, Nature is a great architect - if She wants to be. The only flaw is the masses of tourists (the parking lot is stuffed with cars from all sorts of places. we even spotted cars from Bulgaria, Poland, Sweden and Lithuania, to mention a few).  Also, at this point of the trip we were pretty burnt out, so more than walking we were dragging oursleves through the scenery, wishing for a nice and cozy bed for the night. We got it.

After that we headed to the last stop of our Balkans trip - Zagreb, the Croatian capital. The 3rd biggest settlement of people in our trip (atfer Beograd and Athens), it seems to have a bit for everyone. There is a Medieval part with small old houses and little winding streets, a part from the times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy with big richly decorated houses and broad streets and a ton of bars and cafes. On our first night we ended up in a small place with the funky name The Tolkien´s House. The walls were decorated with all sorts of weapons used in the stories of tht very man, inclding swords and even a massive hammer. We decided to get hammered by the beer of which they offer quite a range, inclding an Irish stout with the name O´Hara which allegedly won a prize for Best Stout. Never seen it in Ireland, but it is good!
Next day we set out to explore the city a bit, but again we dragged ourselves around more than we walked and even though Zagreb is an astonishing place, we were just burned out and couldn´t enjoy it as much as we would have at the beginning of the trip. But sadly, this city marked the end of our journey, and in a way we were looking forward to go home.

That said, we are both happy and sad to be in Austria now to take a breather and rest a little (as far as my - Gernot´s - niece and nephew allow that - which they don´t) and from there we will head on to Spain.
