Travel Story «Struck down!!!»

Essaouira
We almost didnt make it to Essaouira as Trines was struck down by food poisoning and found it difficult to leave the bathroom. How convenient it was to have the basin so close to the toilet!!!! However she battled on and we eventually arrived in the afternoon to meet our new travel companion Alison, a friend of Leigh's.
Absolutely loved Essaouria from the moment we arrived and fought off the men trying to load our backpacks into their carts, hand pulled! It was very clean and the streets in the medina were a bit wider. We followed bus people in the general direction of the hostels before finally asking a local for the final stages. Our hotel was brilliant, an old family home run by the sweetest and quite good-looking young males who would serve us breakfast or silver pots of tea either up on the terrace roof or in our room.
That afternoon Leigh also came down with illness. Thankgoodness for our 2 bathrooms!!!!
So Al and I went out for a walk and had a lovely dinner outside near the water. I went for the very safe option of couscous with vegetables and it was delicious!
Tuesday it was back to shopping and the shops in the medina were a lot less hectic and much less intimidating. You felt so comfortable that you could actually walk into a shop and look around!
Trines and I treated ourselves to some beautiful silver rings.
Wednesday the well ones, Al Trines and myself, went for a very long walk along the beach where we came across a few groups of camels and their insistent guides. A few horses getting a run on the sand as well.
By wednesday night we had had enough of this detox stuff, it had almost been a week! So we went on a hunt and came to a very nice hotel that allowed us a bottle of Moroccan wine. Although we had prepared ourselves for the taste of wine made in a Muslim country, Trines did the best at drinking the almost pure tasting ethanol. Another amazing meal. Love tagines! They are like a hot pot that goes in the oven and cooks the meat inside in the most tender way. Really delicious! A vegetable one is probably the safest option.
Thursday was our last night in Essouira so we decided to go the full set menu at a very nice restaurant. And they had magnificant food, we were all completely stuffed by the end of it!
0230 Friday morning, Trines who I was sharing a bet with makes a mad dash for the stairs. I only just managed to get to the light to stop her from breaking her legs.
The countdown begins.
0300- no change, Trines still in bathroom
0330- no change, Trines still in bathroom
0400- no change, Trines still in bathroom
0430- no change, Trines still in bathroom
0500- our alarms go off. We are all packed to catch the 0600 bus to Marrakesh to then catch a train to Fes.
0530- everyone asleep in bed again, minus Trines. Our kind hosts knocked on our door worried that we were going to miss the bus. We did.
Noone was bothered in the slightest at staying at this beautiful place- both hotel and beach- for another day, except maybe the guy at the ticket office who abused me and Al in French for making the bus wait and then not showing up. This was translated to us by the guy standing behind us.
The seafood in Essaouira was fabulous. Between us we probably sampled all of their fish varieties.
I did end up buying some small tagines that were gorgeous.
So it was Saturday that we were on our way again.......
