Day 74: Trinidad y Jesus

“Set atop a lush green hill northeast of Encarnacion, Trinidad is Paraguay's best-preserved Jesuit reduccion (settlement). Although it has been a Unesco World Heritage site since 1993, travelers shouldn't expect the usual information and conveniences (Lonely planet)”.

At 08.20 I leave Puerto Iguazu to enter Paraguay via Ciudad del Este. Although the distance is relatively short it takes me one and a half hour to get to the bus terminal. (Had to get off the first bus to get a proper stamp of immigrations. I took from there a city bus as I did not have the patience to wait at least another half an hour for the next one to pass again). Have to get out to catch some local currency, Guarani, before I am able to continue my journey, as there is no ATM machine in the terminal. At 11 AM I am able to take the bus to Encarnacion, getting off shortly before in Trinidad. The sales person told me the journey would take 4 hours, but in the end it took much longer as you see really each little village along the road. At least it is a good way to discover the country. At 04.30 PM, I am finally in Trinidad . After a short walk through the main street, I reach the ruins. Except for a plan, there is no explanation at all on the site, but as I have visited the Jesuit ruins in San Ignacion before, there is no issue. On top, there is a small group of German travellers visiting the site at the same time with guide, so that I can follow a little bit of his explanation. Impressive here, are the many details (angels playing music, etc) which are intact in the church. Visiting the other Jesuit ruins in Jesus is impossible the same day. I take therefore the last bus to Jesus (12 km away from Trinidad) and will stay overnight in this neat little town.

I am welcomed by Elisa and Daniel in their 'hospedaje los amigos' and have nice chat about Paraguay, their family and gastronomic habits. In the end, Elisa is willing to demonstrate to me how you make the national dish “chipa”. It is a lot of fun and I have a nice dinner with them.
