St. Petersburg
It's now the morning of 5th October 2006 as we are arriving in St. petersburg, Russia. As always in this country the officials are more difficult than in any other place, now they came up with the new rule of only letting crew ashore if they are in possession of their pasport and matching national Seaman's book, which is not the case for most of us.... there goes one of the few opportunities to go to a nightclub as we finally have an overnight.
Well so be it then, at least we can venture to some of the most dazzling sites in the world, like for instance the Hermitage.... one of the world's most famous museums with a mind blowing collection of about three million art works!!!! If one would spend one minute at each work it would cost you about 9 years to see the entire place!!!
But that's not the time we are here for of course, we will spend the morning wandering around this incredible place.
We are picked up by our guide at the ship, hop in a bus and off we go. Half an hour later we arrive at the Hermitage... our guide takes us around, fisrt we come along the 'classics' as I like to refer myself, the older art works dating as far back as the mediaeval period, we pass a dazzling amount of different rooms, each decorated in their own particular style, all of them absolutely monumental, giving a bit a feel of the life the Tsars must have had, quite an eye for grandeur that's for sure!!!
After a good stroll, always looking around in awe, we come to the place I was most looking for too: the room with the impressionist, Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Gauguin and other amazing artist. And mind blowing it certainly is, they gave a huge collection of Matisse paintings, a stunning overview of Picasso's work, art class come to live!!!!
